Dr. Sakharov: Projects like Northern Lights highlight just how essential durable, corrosion-resistant solutions are for infrastructure operating in challenging CCUS environments. But what if I told you there’s something even better on the horizon?
We’re preparing to launch an innovative anti-corrosion coating in the U.S. market that can extend the lifespan of critical infrastructure by at least 1.5 times. While I can’t share all the details yet, the product is currently undergoing final certification tests and patent work. Stay tuned for updates this spring, you won’t want to miss what’s coming!
The International Energy Agency (IEA) notes that, despite increased momentum for CCS, the current deployment rate is still significantly below what is needed to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. So, how do we address these challenges?
Expro, a service provider with U.S. headquarters in Houston, executed a CCS flagship project called Northern Lights in the Norwegian North Sea and identified several key issues that need addressing for successful carbon capture and storage:
Under-pressured formations: Expro developed downhole/DST tools and surface testing equipment to account for evolving challenges in fluid management during injection tests.
Corrosion challenges: The mechanical integrity of casing and cement faces accelerated corrosion and thermal cycling. Expro's tools, like Fluid Grip Tong, ensured safe handling of corrosion-resistant alloy tubulars to mitigate early failures.
Monitoring requirements: Continuous monitoring is critical to prevent leakage outside of the confining zone. In addition to standard logging, distributed fiber optic sensing technologies, including acoustic and temperature logs, are highlighted as essential tools for maintaining reservoir integrity.
CCUS represents one of the few climate solutions that does not require a complete phase-out of fossil fuels, and scaling it will demand expertise from geoscientists. The industry's reservoir management and exploration skills will play a central role in optimizing project lifecycles.
